Mayor William E. Hart

William E. Hart - 1887, 1888

William E. Hart was born in 1845 in Picton, Ontario, son of Samuel and Lydia Gillett Hart, and came to Watertown in 1862.

He learned the business of photography in the studio of his brother, Charles S. Hart, one of the oldest photographers in Jefferson County, and was an assistant to him until 1884, when he engaged in business for himself. He was also a reputable artist doing portrait work in crayon and India ink.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows, a member of Trinity Episcopal Church and a volunteer firefighter.

Mr. Hart served the City on the Common Council as Alderman from the Third Ward for two years. He was elected Mayor of Watertown in November 1886 and served two terms. He was an uncompromising Democrat and supporter of local party associates.

A prominent figure in Watertown with a pleasing personality, he was always very positive in his views and opinions. Later in life, even as his health was failing, he could often be found downtown chatting cheerily with his friends.

He married Elmira V. Barber.

He died January 23, 1904 at his home on Paddock Street in the City at the age of 58. He is buried at Brookside Cemetery.
