Mayor Hiram F. Inglehart

Hiram Foote Inglehart was born in the Town of Hounsfield, March 28, 1846, a son of Cornelius W. and Emmeline Foote Inglehart. 

Mr. Inglehart was one of the most influential businessmen in Watertown serving as a director and member of the finance committee in three banks of the City and of the Agricultural Insurance Co. He was Vice President of the Watertown Street Railroad Co. He was a well-known hotelier and was proprietor of several hotels in the Thousand Islands region including Westminster Park on Wellesley Island, the Columbian Hotel in Thousand Islands Park and Thousand Island House in Alexandria Bay. He was an active member of the Odd Fellows.

A Republican, Mr. Inglehart served as Alderman of the Fourth Ward on the City’s Common Council for the four years leading up to his nomination to Mayor of Watertown. He was elected Mayor in November 1892 and served two one-year terms.

He married Aronette D. “Nettie” Blodgett, and the couple had eight children: Chester C. Inglehart, Lena E. Inglehart Ackerman, Grace L. Inglehart Sayles, Hiram F. Inglehart, Edna R. Inglehart Hanrahan, Gladys Inglehart Steever, Robert I. Inglehart and George G. Inglehart. 

Mr. Inglehart died January 2, 1902 at his home on Ten Eyck Street in Watertown at the age of 55. He is buried at Brookside Cemetery.
